Philanthropic Freedom - A Pilot Study. Hudson Institue

A pilot study by Hudson Institute - Centre for Global Prosperity, paints a good picture of Australian giving.  Noting an increase in 'planned giving' and the likely increase in greater transparency following recent reforms. 

In the overall ranking of the study, Australia ranked equal third with Sweden and Japan, with an Overall Philanthropy Freedom score of 4.3 out of a possible 5 points (behind Netherlands on 4.8 and US on 4.6)


The pilot study measures 13 countries, examining the barriers and incentives to donate time and money to social organisations, in three main areas

  • Civil Society Regulation
  • Domestic Tax Regulation
  • Cross-Border Flows Regulation
